Ronda Rousey Makes History At UFC 157

Defending 135lb womens champion Ronda Rousey beat Liz Carmouche in the first ever womens bout in the UFC. The victory came in the first round via armbar submission. Which is no surprise because her previous 8 victories were all delivered in the same fashion. There was however a point in the fight that Rousey looked to be in trouble. It came in the first minute of the fight when Carmouche was on Rousey’s back. Carmouche attempted to go for a choke and at one point had Rousey in a neck crank. Rousey stayed patient and was able to get Carmouche off of her and within a matter on minutes had her in an armbar. Carmouche quickly tapped and the fight was over.

With this fight history was made as it was not only the first womens fight in the UFC’s 20 year history, it was also the main event. Ronda Rousey will now be known as the first ever UFC womens champion. Rousey has definitely set her self up to become a mega star. Within 2 years she has gone from an unknown fighter fighting on low visibility Strickforce on Showtime events to main eventing in the biggest MMA promotion around. This is largely due to the way she has amassed her now 9 victories. All of her victories have come in the first round with an armbar submission, most of which came within under a minute of the fight. She has established the armbar as her finisher much like a pro wrestler has a signature finishing maneuver. This is a gimmick that could take her very far in the sport and also create a legend about her like Mike Tyson had in the 1980’s with his knockout punches.

Ronda Rousey will more than likely fight again by years end. The UFC does not have the other big name womens MMA fighter Chris Cyborg. Cyborg recently signed with Invicta. The UFC does have a fresh crop of talent to build up for her. Its pretty safe to say that her next fight regardless of the opponent will be a big draw. She has developed into a super star the like of which will overshadow the previous Queen of MMA Gina Carrano. It will be exciting to she where this crazy ride Rousey is on will end up.

Eli Manning and the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants suffered a disappointing loss in week 1 to the Cowboys.  Anxious to prove they could repeat as Champions, the Giants played the Buccs in week 2 in what turned out to be a crazy game.  The Buccs came out strong in the 1st half leading the Giants 24-13 going into half time.  The Giants came out of half time only scoring 3 points in the 3rd quarter.  The 4th quarter is when the Giants picked it up a notch by scoring 25 points.  The Giants defeated the Buccs 41-34.  The game was one of the wildest of the first 2 weeks.  Eli Manning faltered early with 3 interceptions but made up for it with 510 yards passing and throwing for 3 touchdowns.  The 510 passing yards were a career record for Manning in one game.  The Buccs looked really strong in this game but lost due to Eli and his comeback heroics.  Eli and the Giants showed in week 2 that they are ready to attempt a repeat at the Championship this year.

Andrew Luck Wins 1st Career Game

The number 1 overall pick in April’s Draft Andrew Luck came in with high expectations.  In week 1 he did not meet them, week 2 was another story.  Luck helped his Indianapolis Colts win their 1st game of the season on Sunday against then Minnesota Vikings, winning by a score of 23-20.  Luck was 20-31 passing with 224 yards in the air and rushed for 21 yards.  Luck scored his first 2 touchdown passes of his career in this game, his first was to Dwayne Allen and his second to Reggie Wayne.  More importantly Luck threw no interceptions which was a huge improvement from week 1 where he threw 3.  Luck has definitely improved from week 1 and should develop into a really good NFL QB over the course of the season.

Matt Ryan And The Falcons Defeat Peyton Manning And The Broncos On Monday Night

On Monday Night the Broncos came into Atlanta to face the Falcons in Prime Time.  Matt Ryan and the Falcons were victorious and made a statement.  The Falcons are likely back to the form they were in a couple of years ago.  Matt Ryan led his team to the win with excellent passing.  Ryan had 219 yards passing and had 2 touchdowns.  Manning on the other hand had a rough night,  throwing only 1 TD pass and throwing for 3 interceptions.  The Falcons scored quickly and went into halftime with a 20-7 lead.  In the 3rd quarter the Falcons scored 7 points while the Broncos had 0.  In the 4th quarter Manning tried to lead his team to the comeback victory as his brother Eli did on Sunday but could not pull it off.  The Broncos were able to score only 14 points in the final quarter.  The final score was 27-21 in favor of the Falcons.  It was an interesting match up with and even more interesting outcome.  The Falcons are going to be a strong team for their NFC foes to compete with this season.

“Ready For Glory” The Cowboys Defeat The Giants

The 2012 NFL Season kicked off on Wednesday Night in New York City. The Dallas Cowboys came into town to face their rivals the New York Giants. The Giants are going into the season as the defending champions. The Cowboys are beginning this season like they have so many others, just wanting to not choke under pressure. The Cowboys made a statement last night, they may be ready for success.

The Cowboys won the game 24-17, in a game that many thought would end in disappointment for “Americas Team”. The Cowboys dominated the Giants more than the score will show. The Cowboys QB Tony Romo played with poise and threw for 3 touchdowns and had 307 yards passing. Romo made a statement in this game to all of his detractors that he is a big time QB and can lead his team to wins. Kevin Ogletree had an incredible game, going into the season as the third wide receiver for the Cowboys. Ogletree was given a chance to shine when Jason Witten was limited due to injury. Ogletree took full advantage of his opportunity with 114 yards receiving and had 2 touchdowns.

The Giants did not look like the defending Super Bowl Champions in this game. QB Eli Manning Had just over 200 yards passing and only 1 TD. The Defense of the Giants was just not enough to contain the Cowboys. Point proven when Ogletree scored a 40 yard TD when he was able to break the tackles attempted by the Giants Defense.

The Cowboys began with a bang but can they keep it up? They have a history of tanking in the late part of the season and in the playoffs when they make it. This could be a sign that everything has finally fallen into place for the Cowboys who have struggled for most of the 2000’s. Tony Romo has spent many years trying to be the QB to take the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl. He has come up short many times, will this year be the same? We will have to watch how the Cowboys play the rest of the season to truly know but I have a feeling this Cowboys team is special.

Top 3 Stories From Week 1 Of College Football

College football is back! No longer do we have to wait for the moments and feel of one of the greatest sports seasons around. From now until the Winter we will be able to see the triumphs and heartbreaks that are what college football is all about.  We will also get a peek at the future of professional football.   Week 1 of college football is in the books, so let’s take a look at some of the major stories from the opening weekend.

BAMA Blows Out Michigan, Sights Set On A Repeat Championship

The most anticipated match up of week 1 was with out a doubt the defending Champions Alabama versus Michigan.  Alabama came into this game ranked number 2 while Michigan was ranked number 8.  The Tide pounded the Wolverines 41-14.  Michigan’s Denard Robinson was expected to make a big impact in this game but came up short.  Robinson had only 200 yards passing and was 11-26 in passing.  Robinson’s only bright moment came when he threw a 71 yard pass before halftime that led to a 6-yard touchdown run for the QB.  Bama’s defense was just too much for Michigan.  The Tide will roll into the rest of the season hunting their next title.  After Saturday night anyone who thinks they are not likely to repeat is just fooling themselves.

Penn State Continues To Feel The Blues

Penn State played Ohio on Saturday in a game that any other year would have been a blowout win for The Nittany Lions.  This year was much different,  Ohio won by a score of 24-14.  This Penn State team is one that is trying to start its recovery from the penalties laid down by the NCAA in the wake of the Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.  The team has been deprived of many talented players that were allowed to leave and play for other schools just weeks before the start of the season.  Penn State did have an 11 point lead going into half time, but never scored another point for the remainder of the game.  The home crowd was behind the Nittany Lions but it just wasn’t enough.  This game could be a glimpse of how disappointing the 2012 season will be for the once mighty Penn State Football team.

West Virginia’s Geno Smith Shows He Is A Heisman Candidate

The West Virginia Mountaineers destroyed in state rival Marshall 69-34 on Saturday.  The Mountaineers QB Geno Smith can take a lot of the credit for the win.  Smith threw for 323 yards and had 4 touchdowns.  The defense of Marshall could not contain the talent and aggressiveness of the Mountaineers.  West Virginia had 655 yards on the offensive side, more than any other game last season. Ranked number 11 going into week one, the Mountaineers are going to move up as the weeks go on.  They are a solid team with a great QB.  Smith made himself the standout Heisman candidate this weekend and if he keeps up the incredible play will be in New York for the Ceremony in December.
