Twenty years ago today Michael Jordan hit a scoring milestone in his career.  It was January the 8th, 1993.  The Chicago Bulls were taking on the Milwaukee Bucks at home.  The Bulls won by a score of 120-95.  The Bulls continued on a season that would bring them another NBA title.  During the game Jordan scored his 20,000th career point.  The moment came when Jordan drained a 3 point shot with 5:12 left to go in the game.  He was taken out just seconds later and ended the game with exactly 20,000 points.  He did so in just his 9th NBA season and in his 620th NBA game.

The only other player to reach that scoring mark in a shorter amount time was Wilt Chamberlain.  Chamberlain reached the mark of 20,000 career points in his 499th game.  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the all time scoring leader with 38,387.  Karl Malone holds the 2nd spot with 36,928 points.  Jordan is in 3rd place with 32,292 career points.

Top 3 Stories From Week 3 Of The NFL

Week 3 of the NFL season was one of the most unpredictable so far this season.  It also so more controversy over the replacement referees.  It was a very exciting group of games, so let’s take a look at 2centsworthofsports.com’s top 3 stories from this week in the NFL.

The Replacement Refs Blow The Game For The Packers

The replacement referees have been atrocious the season.  They have missed many calls and made wrong ones as well.  On Monday Night the stand in refs made the worst call of the season.  In closing seconds of the final quarter with the Packers leading the Seahawks 12-7 the unthinkable happened.  Seahawks QB Russell Wilson completed a pass to Wide Receiver Golden Tate for the win, or did he.  What actually happened was Packers Defensive Back M.D. Jennings intercepted the pass and had it wrestled away from him by Tate while on the ground.  The play was reviewed referee Wayne Elliot who stated ”the ruling on the field stands”.  The Seattle faithful loved it but NFL fans everywhere were outraged.  This seasons referee’s have been horrible and until the lock out ends with the veteran refs we might be seeing a lot more games end this way.

Many Strong Teams Upset By Unlikely Foes

The season has only seen a few up sets during the first two weeks of play.  Week three brought with it many upsets.  The lowly Jaguars defeated the Colts on the road by a score of 22-17, outscoring the Colts 19-3 in the second half.  The Chiefs defeated the Saints in overtime 27-24.  The Bengals beat the Redskins 38-31, with excellent play from their QB Andy Dalton who threw for over 300 yards and had 3 TD passes.  The Titans stunned the Lions 44-41 in overtime.  The 49ers were defeated in the Metro dome by the Vikings 24-13.  The Steelers lost to the aiders 34-31, even though “Big” Ben Roethlisberger had a great game with 384 yards passing and 4 TD’s.  It was a wild and crazy Sunday.  Who know maybe we will see more of this as teams that have been lower level become stronger and more competitive.

Matt Schaub Takes An Illegal Hit And Losses Part Of His Ear

On Sunday afternoon the Houston Texans came into Denver to face the Broncos.  What happened would be one of the most gruesome sights in recent memory. The Texans QB Matt Schaub dropped back for a pass and was tackled by two Broncos Defenders simultaneously.  His helmet popped off and he immediately grabbed his ear.  When he removed his hands from his head he was missing a chunk of the upper portion of his ear.  Schaub showed his toughness and continued to play throwing for almost 300 yards and had 4 TD passes.  The Texans won the game by a score of 31-25.

Top 3 Stories From Week 2 Of The NFL

The incredible action of week 1 carried into week 2 on Sunday.  Week 2 brought many great match ups and answers to questions unanswered in week 1.  2centsworthofsports.com brings you the top 3 stories from the second week of the NFL.

Eli Manning Rallies His Giants Past The Buccs, Has A Career Game

Eli Manning and the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants suffered a disappointing loss in week 1 to the Cowboys.  Anxious to prove they could repeat as Champions, the Giants played the Buccs in week 2 in what turned out to be a crazy game.  The Buccs came out strong in the 1st half leading the Giants 24-13 going into half time.  The Giants came out of half time only scoring 3 points in the 3rd quarter.  The 4th quarter is when the Giants picked it up a notch by scoring 25 points.  The Giants defeated the Buccs 41-34.  The game was one of the wildest of the first 2 weeks.  Eli Manning faltered early with 3 interceptions but made up for it with 510 yards passing and throwing for 3 touchdowns.  The 510 passing yards were a career record for Manning in one game.  The Buccs looked really strong in this game but lost due to Eli and his comeback heroics.  Eli and the Giants showed in week 2 that they are ready to attempt a repeat at the Championship this year.

Andrew Luck Wins 1st Career Game

The number 1 overall pick in April’s Draft Andrew Luck came in with high expectations.  In week 1 he did not meet them, week 2 was another story.  Luck helped his Indianapolis Colts win their 1st game of the season on Sunday against then Minnesota Vikings, winning by a score of 23-20.  Luck was 20-31 passing with 224 yards in the air and rushed for 21 yards.  Luck scored his first 2 touchdown passes of his career in this game, his first was to Dwayne Allen and his second to Reggie Wayne.  More importantly Luck threw no interceptions which was a huge improvement from week 1 where he threw 3.  Luck has definitely improved from week 1 and should develop into a really good NFL QB over the course of the season.

Matt Ryan And The Falcons Defeat Peyton Manning And The Broncos On Monday Night

On Monday Night the Broncos came into Atlanta to face the Falcons in Prime Time.  Matt Ryan and the Falcons were victorious and made a statement.  The Falcons are likely back to the form they were in a couple of years ago.  Matt Ryan led his team to the win with excellent passing.  Ryan had 219 yards passing and had 2 touchdowns.  Manning on the other hand had a rough night,  throwing only 1 TD pass and throwing for 3 interceptions.  The Falcons scored quickly and went into halftime with a 20-7 lead.  In the 3rd quarter the Falcons scored 7 points while the Broncos had 0.  In the 4th quarter Manning tried to lead his team to the comeback victory as his brother Eli did on Sunday but could not pull it off.  The Broncos were able to score only 14 points in the final quarter.  The final score was 27-21 in favor of the Falcons.  It was an interesting match up with and even more interesting outcome.  The Falcons are going to be a strong team for their NFC foes to compete with this season.

#21 Kansas State Beats Up The Miami Hurricanes

On Saturday the number 21 ranked team in the country Kansas State hosted the Miami Hurricanes for the first time ever.  K State was led by their Heisman candidate QB Collin Klein.  Klein had 169 yards passing, 54 yards rushing and 2 TD passes in a win against Missouri State last week.  On the other side of the stadium the Miami Hurricanes were riding the hopes of their break out freshman running back Duke Johnson.  Johnson 7 rushes for 135 yards and 2 TD runs in a week 1 win over Boston College.  While K State was favored going into the game the Canes had a chance at pulling out the upset on the road.

The game however told a story that not even those favoring K State would have predicted.  K State crushed the Canes by a final score of 52-13.  The first quarter saw Klein and the K State squad looking really strong and dominating the Canes on the offensive side of the ball.  The Canes made some mistakes in the first half, such as Duke Johnson dropping an open pass which would have led to a great gain of yards for the Canes.  K State played their brand of football by using up the clock and wearing down the defense.  K State made a mistake going into halftime when Klein tried a trick play reverse pass to his running back that led to a loss of yards and a missed field goal by K State.  The momentum appeared to have changed going into half time with K State leading 24-6.

When the second half started the Canes had many chances to get their offense going but could not capitalize.  K State picked their play back up even stronger than before in the 4th quarter.  K State out scored The Canes 21 to 7 in the final quarter.  Collin Klein put on a clinic of passing and rushing to finish the game.  The only bright spot for the Canes in the second half and probably the entire game was a 77 yard kick off return by Duke Johnson.  The Canes will have to work on developing Johnson who has tremendous potential but made too many mistakes.

Collin Klein had 210 yards passing, 81 yards rushing.  With 1 TD pass and 3 rushing TD’s Klein showed how talented he really is on Saturday.  We could be seeing Klein with the Heisman Trophy in December if he continues to put up numbers like he did in this game.

“Ready For Glory” The Cowboys Defeat The Giants

The 2012 NFL Season kicked off on Wednesday Night in New York City. The Dallas Cowboys came into town to face their rivals the New York Giants. The Giants are going into the season as the defending champions. The Cowboys are beginning this season like they have so many others, just wanting to not choke under pressure. The Cowboys made a statement last night, they may be ready for success.

The Cowboys won the game 24-17, in a game that many thought would end in disappointment for “Americas Team”. The Cowboys dominated the Giants more than the score will show. The Cowboys QB Tony Romo played with poise and threw for 3 touchdowns and had 307 yards passing. Romo made a statement in this game to all of his detractors that he is a big time QB and can lead his team to wins. Kevin Ogletree had an incredible game, going into the season as the third wide receiver for the Cowboys. Ogletree was given a chance to shine when Jason Witten was limited due to injury. Ogletree took full advantage of his opportunity with 114 yards receiving and had 2 touchdowns.

The Giants did not look like the defending Super Bowl Champions in this game. QB Eli Manning Had just over 200 yards passing and only 1 TD. The Defense of the Giants was just not enough to contain the Cowboys. Point proven when Ogletree scored a 40 yard TD when he was able to break the tackles attempted by the Giants Defense.

The Cowboys began with a bang but can they keep it up? They have a history of tanking in the late part of the season and in the playoffs when they make it. This could be a sign that everything has finally fallen into place for the Cowboys who have struggled for most of the 2000’s. Tony Romo has spent many years trying to be the QB to take the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl. He has come up short many times, will this year be the same? We will have to watch how the Cowboys play the rest of the season to truly know but I have a feeling this Cowboys team is special.

UFC On FOX 4, Machida “Most Impressive”

The UFC returned to Loas Angeles, CA and the Staples Center on Saturday night.  The event was the UFC’s 4th special on the FOX network.  The main show on FOX featured four fights.  Two of the fights featured Light Heavywieghts that would determine who will face the winner of the Jon Jones VS Dan Henderson for the division’s championship.  UFC President stated earlier this week that the fighter who looked “Most Impressive” would get the future Light Heavyweight Title shot.

The show started with a Welterweight fight between Damarques Johnson and the returning Mike Swick.  Johnson dominated the fight on the ground in the 1st round.  When the 2nd round began the fight quickly turned around for Swick who was able to grab Johnson’s leg and take him down.  While Swick was taking Johnson down when he delivered a knockout punch to Johnson and was victorious in his return to fighting after a 2 year absence.

The next fight had Joe Lauzon defeat Jamie Varner in a Lightweight contest via submission in the 3rd round.  This was an incredible back and forth fight that had both men matched up pretty evenly.  Varner seemed to get tired as the fight progressed.  Lauzon took advantage of Varner’s fatigue with a triangle choke in the 3rd round that forced Varner to submit.  Great showing for both fighters but this fight made Lauzon look like a star.

In the 1st of 2 Light Heavyweight bouts, Lyoto Machida defeated Ryan Bader in the 2nd round via knockout.  Both fighters stood up during the 1st round and neither fighter took great risk or damage.  Early in the second round Machida counter punched his way to a victory when Bader took a chance at charging at Machida with strikes.  Machida looked good in this fight and ended it early like he was expected to do.

The Main event and final Light Heavyweight bout took place between Shogun Rua and Brandon Vera.  This fight was won by Rua with a knockout in the 4th round.  This fight was mostly dominated by Rua who had Vera on the ground for a lot of the fight and landed more strikes.  Vera did looked good in the fight with the amount of punishment he was able to take and still push through.  Rua won when he knocked Vera down to the ground with a punch against the cage and was able to finish it by punishing Vera.  Rua admitted he was getting tired towards the 2nd round and it showed.

Dana White after the show was over announced that he felt Machida was “most impressive” and would recieve the future title shot.  White’s decision was the obvious and correct one.  Jon Jones is likely to be the Champion who will face Machida later this year or early next year.  Jones does have to fight Dan Henderson who is a legend in the sport but probably will not be able to defeat Jones.  Jones has previously defeated Machida so the fight will be difficult for the UFC to sell.  That is the nature of the beast however and the UFC will just have to find a way to market the fight.

This was a solid show with good fights that did not go to decision.  The UFC needs to continue to put good shows on FOX so that they can attract more casual fans.  It would be to their advantage to put bigger fights on the FOX shows to expand the audience.  The UFC feels their main focus should be PPV and not the network specials.  At least this turned out to be a good show but the UFC needs to step up their game on FOX if they want to create new fans.
