Record Holders: Willie “Flipper” Anderson – Single Game Receiving Yards

On November 26, 1989 the L.A. Rams visited the New Orleans Saints in a game that would make history. A record was broken on that day, a record that has stood ever since. The star of the game was Rams Wide Receiver Flipper Anderson. On that day he amassed 336 receiving yards and scored one touchdown.

The previous record had been held by Stephone Paige of the Kansas City Chiefs. Paige broke the previous record on December 22, 1985. Paige recorded 309 total receiving yards against the San Diego Chargers in that game.

Since Flipper Anderson’s incredible performance in 1989 only one player has had more than 300 yards receiving in a single game. That player is Detroit Lions star Calvin Johnson. On October 27, 2013 Johnson had 329 yards receiving in a game between the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys. Johnson missed the record by 7 yards but holds the second place position on the all time list for this particular record.

Flipper Anderson went on to have a respectable career after his amazing feat in 1989. He retired with a career total of 5,357 yards and 28 touchdowns. He played from 1988-1997 for the Rams, Colts, Redskins and Broncos. In fact his final season win the NFL was with the 1997 Denver Broncos who defeated the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII to become the Champions.

“Sunday Ready” Robert Griffin III Makes A Succesful Debut

It used to be that a new NFL quarterback had time to develop and flourish over multiple season, not anymore.  There are many teams each year that need solutions for their QB position woes.  They want it fast and the best way to go now is with a top ten QB, rather than the veteran back up or fallen starting QB.  It is easier to go with a new QB and take a chance at their future.  The old system of getting a veteran QB is going away because teams just don’t want to be stagnate anymore.  Players like Cam Newton have done great things to changes the way teams look at top pick QB’s.

In April the Washington Redskins went in the direction that most teams are going.  That direction is with a top pick QB to be the future of their franchise.  With the second pick in the first round of the NFL Draft the Redskins selected Robert Griffin III (RG3).  RG3 had an incredible final season at Baylor in 2011 and won the Heisman Trophy.  RG3 has drawn many comparisons to Cam Newton, in terms of both athleticism and potential.

On Sunday RG3 made his highly anticipated regular season debut.  He led his Redskins into New Orleans to face the Saints and one of the best QB’s in the league Drew Brees.  Griffin got off to a great start completing his first 7 passes for 123 yards.  One of those passes was an amazing 88 yard pass to Wide Receiver Pierre Garcon.  Garcon was able to make it into the end zone for Griffin’s 1st NFL touchdown pass, which came in the 1st quarter.  Griffin’s 2nd touchdown pass came in the second quarter, a 5 yard toss to Aldrick Robinson.  Going into half time the Redskins were beating the Saints by a score of 20-14.

In the second half of the game Griffin led the Redskins down the field in position for 3 made field goal attempts.  The Saints tried to comeback in the second half but with a just a field goal, two touchdown passes and a 2 point conversion it was just not enough.  The Redskins won the game by a score of 40-32.

Griffin had an outstanding debut with 320 yards passing, 42 yards rushing, 2 touchdown passes and no interceptions.  The Redskins might just be back in a big way.  Griffin met all the expectations of the Redskin fans and his team, can he keep it up?  That will be the fun thing to watch for this season.

“Ready For Glory” The Cowboys Defeat The Giants

The 2012 NFL Season kicked off on Wednesday Night in New York City. The Dallas Cowboys came into town to face their rivals the New York Giants. The Giants are going into the season as the defending champions. The Cowboys are beginning this season like they have so many others, just wanting to not choke under pressure. The Cowboys made a statement last night, they may be ready for success.

The Cowboys won the game 24-17, in a game that many thought would end in disappointment for “Americas Team”. The Cowboys dominated the Giants more than the score will show. The Cowboys QB Tony Romo played with poise and threw for 3 touchdowns and had 307 yards passing. Romo made a statement in this game to all of his detractors that he is a big time QB and can lead his team to wins. Kevin Ogletree had an incredible game, going into the season as the third wide receiver for the Cowboys. Ogletree was given a chance to shine when Jason Witten was limited due to injury. Ogletree took full advantage of his opportunity with 114 yards receiving and had 2 touchdowns.

The Giants did not look like the defending Super Bowl Champions in this game. QB Eli Manning Had just over 200 yards passing and only 1 TD. The Defense of the Giants was just not enough to contain the Cowboys. Point proven when Ogletree scored a 40 yard TD when he was able to break the tackles attempted by the Giants Defense.

The Cowboys began with a bang but can they keep it up? They have a history of tanking in the late part of the season and in the playoffs when they make it. This could be a sign that everything has finally fallen into place for the Cowboys who have struggled for most of the 2000’s. Tony Romo has spent many years trying to be the QB to take the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl. He has come up short many times, will this year be the same? We will have to watch how the Cowboys play the rest of the season to truly know but I have a feeling this Cowboys team is special.

Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson Released By The Miami Dolphins

Less than one day after being arrested for a domestic battery charge “Ochocinco” is history.  The Miami Dolphins are now holding their players to higher standards.  They showed how committed they are to those standards on Sunday.  Chad Johnson was with the team for less than two months and his Dolphins legacy will be a tarnished one.

Chad Jonson was looking to bounce back from his worst season ever last year.  Most teams did not want to touch him due to his past of being egotistical and causing drama with his teammates.  The problem for him was not his usual mistake like saying the wrong thing but committing a criminal act.  The Dolphins were wise with this decision to cut ties with him and do it now.

The question now is, what is next for Chad Johnson?  More than likely no team will want to touch him until his legal issue is over.  That could mean a season lost for Johnson.  Johnson could face jail time in the near future.  This is the worst career decision he could have made and will impact the rest of his life.

Chad “Uh-Oh Cinco” Johnson Arrested In Miami

On Saturday night Chad Johnson formerly Chad Ocho Cinco was arrested in Miami.  The arrest stemmed from a domestic assault that occurred outside of his south Florida home.  Johnson’s wife Evelyn Lozado alleged she was headbutted by him during an argument.  This is one of the worst things that Johnson could have done to his football career.

Johnson was signed by the Miami Dolphins earlier this summer.  Johnson was ineffective and largely unused last season for the New England Patriots.  He caught only 15 passes in 15 games for the AFC Champion Patriots.  The Dolphins wanted a big name to bring to camp and decided to take a chance on Johnson.  The experiment is already going wrong and the season is still a month away.

Chad Johnson has made a career of being T.O. like with his ego and antics.  Once wearing a Hall Of Fame jacket with is name written on the back of it on the sidelines of a game.   While talented and successful he has a knack for creating controversy and adversely affecting teams.  Johnson was recently married and changed his name back to his birth name from his attention getting Chad Ocho Cinco monicker.  Johnson has always been about getting his name out in the media and being bigger than the team.  He has done it again but this time he could face serious charges and even be released by the one team that wanted to give him an opportunity.  Johnson is only getting older and does not have much time left to be screwing up or alienating himself from his team.

The Dolphins have been in rebuilding mode since Dan Marino retired after the 2000 NFL season.  The team has made a mistake by signing Johnson and would be making an even graver mistake by keeping him.  The Dolphins have struggled and been at the bottom of the AFC East for way to long.  This is an organization that should be on top with such a great legacy and tradition.  They obviously still have a long way to go judging by the Ocho Cinco experiment.  He is made for one thing and one thing only, to destroy a team while making the papers for doing and saying ridiculous things.  Johnson has gone too far this time and its time for the Dolphins to cut ties with the Pro Bowl Wide Receiver.
